The Bitter Bachelor Martini

What causes a great guy to end up bitter? We can refer to single women over 40 as Cougars but there is no description for an aging single man? Why are some men immune to becoming a Bitter Bachelor and others doomed to a life as a crusty old man? The Bitter Bachelor martini eases all the aches and pains of an aging body and a lonely, empty heart.

I adore men and have many good friends that are bitter bachelors, so this is not a slag on the male sex! This column was painstakingly researched and both sexes where asked their opinions. The Bitter Bachelor martini is an ultra smooth blend of Vodka, Vermouth and bitters; it finishes with the sultry flavor of scotch and is definitely a man’s martini. A few nights ago, one of my long time male friends met me for a martini and some laughs. I ordered him the Bitter Bachelor; he hesitated when he heard the name but smiled when he savored the taste. He joked about the time when had been a bitter bachelor and commented that if it had not been for friends like me who kicked his ass he would still be in that rut. We both knew several bitter bachelors so we started discussing their characteristics. This is the summary: 1. Minimum 35 yrs old. 2. No committed relationships in at least 5 years. 3. Serious sports addiction. 4. Creatures of habit, these men can be found on the same bar stool/ coffee shop at exactly the same time everyday. 5. Kings of Self Sabotage! Every time they start dating a great girl they sabotage the potential relationship by either being commitment phobic/ blowing her off or cheating (this one is highly successful). 6. They date or attempt to date younger women.

Not every bitter bachelor has to possess every characteristic.

They like to date younger women because they provide them with sex but will not interfere with their life. However, as their six pack changes into a keg and their hair thins the option of dating the younger girls dramatically decreases. Every few years they meet a mature woman who captivates them. When they realize that they are altering their routine to date her, the fear of change emerges and the self sabotage usually kicks in. In their mind they are oblivious to the option of having their life style and a great woman.

We knew what constitutes a bitter bachelor but the question remained "How did they end up that way?" The answer came from our bartender, he stated that there are men who wait for their life to happen and then ones who grab life by the balls and make it happen. The ones who wait for life to unfold become fearful of making changes and trying anything new, they resist anything that disrupts their routine and sabotage potential opportunities and relationships. The men who wait do so because they lack self confidence. They are usually not satisfied with their careers, personal health or finances and tend to over compensate with a huge ego. Our bartender was right! I was speechless, which is rare! I started thinking of all the Bitter Bachelors that I knew; they all had huge egos and a hard time taking compliments. If they only believed in how fabulous they were and opened their mind to new possibilities they could have it all: an exciting life, love and a hot woman. Why was it so scary for them to have it all? What did they have to lose compared to what they could gain?

Conclusion:

The Bitter Bachelor martini is a drink that is amazingly smooth and strong. It finishes with a hint of scotch and helps ease the bitterness of a man’s life. As men age they become creatures of habit and resistant to change. The smoothness of this martini is like a man’s routine, life is easy when there are no disruptions. However, over time their life becomes boring and then the bitterness sets in. Grabbing life by the balls and going for it may cause change but what you gain by the experience will only make your life more satisfying. For all the Bitter Bachelors out there, remember that you can have it all (including the fabulous girl and the sports) if you just take a chance, grab life by the balls and break out of your box! Then you will never be bored or end up a crusty old man!
