The Bronx Martini

By: Marjie Martini

As always insight comes to me in the latest hour of the evening. This evening I am looking at the clock and thinking that I should definitely be in bed. Due to the aftermath of a weekend without any sleep. A weekend where I realized that the phase "only the fittest survive" is totally and completely true. On this past weekend only the toughest women survived. So became the rule of the Bronx martini. The rule is that if you drink it, you are one tough chick.

When we think of the Bronx, it brings up many visuals. It is no doubt that this area of the world has a definite reputation. From baseball to the mafia, to pop rock stars, this area has a reputation that I doubt anyone can truly understand. That is why this martini has a perplexing taste even though it is a simple combination. A mixture of gin with a little bit of orange juice and a lot of fresh lemon. As I took my first sip my lips puckered and my eyes watered and I thought, well this is definitely a gin martini. You can taste the gin and that taste is what makes you tough. As I sipped away, the tartness of this martini grew on me. As did my understanding of what a tough woman really is.

The Bronx is one tough drink! I think most of my girlfriends are tough. I have a few wimpy feminine girlfriends, but in general I would classify myself and my girls as tough. Mainly because we live in a male dominated environment and we have learned to do hard sports. We then turn into the sexy and sassy girls at night, a role that we have done extremely well. When you are a tough woman you know what you want and

you go after it. Sometimes this can bite you in the ass because you scare away what you are going after. A Bronx martini woman can be labeled as intimidating or even a bitch. This is very frustrating because when a man goes after what he wants and is aggressive he is respected because he is being a man. When a woman does the same thing she is a bitch and the guys run in the opposite direction.

“Why is it that men want a woman to be aggressive in the bedroom but no where else?”

Ever since woman’s liberation, the females of the world have been trying to take over the roles of men and become self sufficient. Woman now make more money, we have powerful careers, we own property etc. But in our desire to be independent did we forget to be female? Have woman gotten so tough and intimidated men so much, that we are just no longer sexy? Or are men so worried about offending us that they have forgotten how to treat us like women?

As I poured myself and my tough girlfriends another Bronx martini, I had the realization that I am over the independent woman thing. I am a tough woman but firstly I am a female! And I want to be treated as a woman! I want a guy to make the first move, the guy to open the door, the guy to pay the bill and the guy to rip my clothes off. Well the girls looked at me in shock. They could not believe my statement. As they picked their jaws up off the ground and continued to sip their martinis, one by one they all admitted that they felt the same way. Even though they were tough deep down inside they all wanted to be treated like a woman. When they thought about it, and as strange as the concept was, they all agreed that they wanted a man to take charge.

Conclusion:

When you first sip the Bronx martini you may be intimidated by the toughness of the gin but you should never run away because after a few sips the gin mellows out and the martini finishes with a smooth sweetness. Just like when a man meets a tough woman even though she knows what she wants and may go after it, remember that after she mellows out, she is still a woman and will finish off the evening with smooth sweetness. Unless of course she is in the bedroom? Oh ya! Boys, you gotta love the Bronx.
