Martinis at Midnight

The Black and White Martini

The Black and White Martini

Have you ever met someone and been completely dumb founded by their comment? Have you ever been perplexed by a martini? Well a few nights ago I had the unexpected experience of both. Why is it always when you have no intentions of an evening that you end up having an amazing time. Sometimes I think that we plan so many things in our lives that we forget just to be spontaneous and have fun. It is like we are all caged animals structured by our cell phones and crack berries, if a message is not popping up to tell us to have fun, we do not know what to do.

When I arrived at my favorite martini bar/steakhouse there were several things that struck me as different. The first and most important was the unique martini that was on the table, as I sat down with my three sassy girlfriends. It looked like a modern piece of art. What was this enticing martini? It was the Black and White martini, because it was literally black and white. The bottom of this martini was layered with Crème de Cacao and the top was Vanilla Vodka. It was garnished with a lovely skewer of black licorice candies. What could possibly be better than a martini with candy? Yippee! The presentation was killer. However, once you stirred this martini and took a taste it got even better. The Black and White creates the perfect balance between sweet and strong. This martini is strong but due to the sweetness you can enjoy each luscious sip.

The second thing that was different was that for once our crazy schedules coordinated and we were actually all together. The third thing that was weird was the pile of cell phones and crack berries in the center of the table. When I inquired about the electronic pile I was informed that I had to surrender my phone and that they would all be turned off. It was to be a night out with the girls with no interruptions from kids, boyfriends or work. Wow, we were really

“Stepping out of the box tonight!”

The Black and White martinis flowed and so did our laughter. We caught up on our crazy lives, our loves and our careers. We were deep into the sagas of life when a round of martinis arrived from two gentlemen at another table. I informed the server that these men were welcome to join us but only if they were prepared to drink the Black and White martini. My girlfriends scolded me for interrupting our chick time by inviting over these men. I just laughed and said “ladies we need to get out of our box and have some fun!” We were not disappointed, the men were very entertaining. They spoke with a deep southern drawl and where very much gentlemen. They were humorous and flattering. A perfect combination for a girl’s night out.

When my two girlfriends went to visit the ladies room, the southern boys made the comment that they were amazed that colored woman could be so intelligent. I just about fell off my bar stool! What were they talking about? My girlfriends were not colored, one was Asian and the other is Native American! The southern boys tried to explain that they were being complimentary and that they had never had such a long conversation with any women that were black. I was shaking my head in disbelief; I could not believe what I had heard. Was it the martinis? Or was I actually sitting at table with two men that were racist? The southern men tried to explain their comments. However, they just dug themselves a deeper and deeper hole. I listened speechless to the ignorant and vile comments that came from their mouths. I realized that these grown men had never been exposed to the world outside their southern box. They did not have similar views to us. We just accept people for who they are, regardless of the color of their skin or shape of their eyes. These men just see black; it was sad that the racism had been programmed into their brains since childhood.

I thanked the gentlemen for the martinis and upon my girlfriends return informed them that we would be continuing on with our evening, by ourselves. Later, the four of us were dancing the night away. I realized that we all are different, one short Canadian blonde, one tall Irish redhead, one brunette Native American and one dark brown Asian. We all looked different and danced different but inside we were all the same. I felt an overwhelming sense of pity for the southern men we had left behind; it was so sad that they were so ignorant. If only they had been open minded they would have been out on the dance floor with us and having and out of the box experience.

Conclusion:

Our lives are so structured, we are dictated to by our machines and our desire to be constantly in touch. It is like the presentation of the Black and White martini, this martini is structured by its layers of different alcohols. When you stir the Black and White martini you receive great strength and sweetness just like when you are spontaneous and let loose. The stirring can cause you to have experiences that are out of your normal realm. If you are ignorant and never open your mind up to the differences in our world you will forever be left behind. The world’s diversity of languages, religions and cultures is a great treasure because it gives us the opportunity to recognize ourselves in each other. When it comes down to it we are the same, particularly when we are all drinking the Black and White martini.

If you want to step out of your box then this is the martini for you. Something totally different can make you realize that we are all the same no matter how different we look. This martini is unique in how it is made, how it looks and definitely how it tastes.
